Break The Rules ... of Tile

by The Tile Shop 20. October 2009 09:26

At The Tile Shop we are well aware that many consumers think there are “rules” when creating the tiled space of their dreams. A bathrooms should be all marble, travertine is best in the kitchen, ceramic is retro, glass is contemporary - the list goes on and on.

The truth is there are no rules when it comes to using tile. We often think that the more conventional ideals that are broken when creating a space with tile, the better the space will be. One of the biggest tile misconceptions today is that you cannot mix ceramic with stone. This is very much not the truth. Both types of tile have unique characteristics and benefits, and together they create unique designs with a depth that would have been unattainable using just a single type of tile.

The bath below was created using a wide variety of types of tile. The floor is made of Mongolian Desert Slate (Natural Stone). The wall is made up of both Chiaro Travertine (Natural Stone)Grecia Beige (Ceramic), and a accent listello (Glass & Travertine). Just as many design styles today are being mixed to create an individual style so are types of tile. This can also help those looking to update a space on a budget.

Ceramic is a cost effective option but does not carry the edging options available in natural stone. We design ceramic lines that coordinate with our natural stone so that the consumer can mix and match the two and create a fantastic space at any budget. Check out the bath below again - Large Grecia Beige ceramic wall tile is used to make the space look large and are easy to wipe clean and maintain (great for kids!), but the base is not made of ceramic it is travertine and so are the accents finishing edges.

The accent piece that tops the walls wainscot is also a mix of types of tiles. Small green and brown glass tiles mixed with mosaic travertine pieces bring the whole space together. The glass pulls in the colors within the slate floor while adding yet another texture and the travertine ties in the base, as well as, the tubs focal wall made from travertine.

The tub focal wall uses large Chiaro Travertine tiles with The Tile Shop’s exclusive wall tile out corners - The Corsica. The Corsica piece is a 12” L -shaped finishing piece designed for walls out corners and is great for DIYers who are looking to avoid any complex tile cuts but want a smooth finished edge. This wall bump out serves a few functions, it is a great focal point, it is an ideal place for storage and decoration near the tub, and it allows for space within the walls for plumbing and additional electrical that may be needed for a pedestal tub. Again mixing ceramic with stone made all the difference in this focal point - the walls would have been all one texture, one shade of beige, and the out corners would not have been smooth finished with ease.

Remember in tile - Rules are meant to be broken. Mix textures, colors, types, and size. Try a type you thought was traditional with one you thought was modern, and for sure mix stone with ceramic. With thousands of different tiles at The Tile Shop you can mix and match until you have created a look that is completely individual to you!

Effectiveness of Superior Adhesives & Chemicals Formulations Against H1N1

The recent global outbreak of H1N1 influenza virus (swine flu) has highlighted the importance of proper hygiene, including the cleaning and disinfecting of hard, non-porous surfaces. The EPA has recently noted that those products currently registered for use against the influenza A virus will be effective against the 2009-H1N1 (swine) flu strain as well as other influenza A virus strains, on hard non-porous surfaces. A list of Superior Adhesive & Chemical formulations proven effective against the influenza A virus can be found below. Superior Adhesives & Chemicals also wishes to remind our customers of the many formulations that have been proven effective against avian influenza (H5N1). Avian influenza (H5N1) is transmitted primarily through contact with surfaces and materials that have been contaminated by infected birds. A list of those Superior Adhesives & Chemicals formulations proven effective against avian influenza (H5N1) can also be found below. As always, for safe and effective use of these products, carefully follow all label instructions. Remember that your first line of defense, per CDC guidelines, is the frequent and thorough washing of hands with soap and water. Hard surface disinfectant products are not for use on skin and should only be used on hard, non-porous surfaces.

How To Make A Tiled Outdoor Bar

by The Tile Shop 19. August 2009 09:52

Entertain In Style

Create Your Own Tiled Bar

Warm nights and cool breezes beckon us to the backyard, and there’s no reason to go inside for

anything this summer -- even when you’re entertaining. Freshen your guests’ drinks and fill the

appetizer trays straight from your exquisite outdoor bar. And don’t forget to casually mention you

built it yourself.

Follow our guide to create this awe-inspiring bar with stunning granite countertops, earthy stone

architectural facings and sweet-scented cedar cabinets. And if the backyard isn’t your style, build

your bar for the basement. Create your own space – indoors or out.

  • A: Build a basic rectangle wood frame using 16” studs. Center the frame on plywood sheets, allowing a ¾” border. For outdoor bars, make sure to use green treated lumber. Our finished bar is 6’ x 18” – an ideal size to showcase our sleek 2’ x 2’ green granite counter tiles.
  • B: Create the countertop base using the same plywood as the outside of the bar frame. Like the frame, we determined the countertop size by using three 2’ x 2’ granite tiles.
  • C: Moisture protection is an important consideration for indoor and outdoor bar tops. We recommend using Hardie Backer tile backer board to keep your bar dry, but the backer board comes in a variety of thicknesses. The proper thickness depends on the type of granite edging used on the countertop. Check with a Tile Shop representative to make sure you’re purchasing the right backer board for your bar.
  • D: Making sure your tiles stay in place is essential, and we recommend Pro Lastic or Pro Bond thinset for ultimate adhesion. Both brands are available at the Tile Shop – online or in the store.
  • E: To create a clean, finished look on the granite countertop, select some of our granite tile edging (see page 6 of this catalog). Tile edging adds function and beauty, and pre-finished granite tiles average two-thirds less than the cost of a granite slab.
  • F: Granite is a captivating, luxurious material that can withstand the elements – a great characteristic for an outdoor bar. Our bar uses three finished 2’ x  2’ granite tiles, so no cutting is required. Explore your creativity with a variety of granite tile colors and sizes to match any décor.
  • G: We added wood corbels to the bar face for striking embellishment and accent detail. Completely functional, the corbels provide support for the 6” countertop overhang and boldly contrast the stone façade. Just like granite tiles, the corbels come in a vast array of colors and wood species to suit your individual style.
  • H: Our outdoor bar façade features natural stone architectural facings with the rustic look and feel of slate. With architectural facings, enjoy the complex appearance of intricately hand-stacked stone, but delight in the ease of installation. Our stone facings are available in grout-less, easy-to-install modular panels. And if creativity sparks, don’t limit yourself to our design – build your entertainment bar with any tile or textured facing available from the Tile Shop and express your individual style.
  • I: Cutting tile edges can be cumbersome, but the Tile Shop makes it simple. With precut corners on all of our architectural facings, installing tile as a DIYer just got a little bit easier.
  • J: Adding function and flare, we included a field tile toe-kick to our outdoor entertainment bar as an optional embellishment. Using the natural stone to match the façade, the toe-kick uses 6” x 12” slate tiles. Want to take your toe-kick to the next level? Add a metal footrest for authentic bar charm.
  • We selected the sweet-smelling, earthy feel of cedar wood for our outdoor bar’s cabinetry, but if your creativity beckons down a path of maple, oak or cherry, follow your inspired intuition and express your personal style. (photo above)
  • The leaf-shaped door pulls were hands-down the perfect accent to our outdoor entertainment bar. In tune with the earthy, rustic theme, the hardware compliments the natural stone façade, rich granite countertops and rugged cedar cabinetry. (see photo)

Ready to embark on building your own entertainment bar? Let your creativity run wild. And let the Tile Shop help you along the way with our expert advice and high quality products.

Brian & Alexa from Crystal, MN are our 3rd PLACE WINNERS who received 45% off their entire tile project.

-How did you get involved in this DIY project?

"I had recently bought a home in foreclosure and I had to do a lot of updating. My bathroom was next on the 'To Do List'. I heard about the Tile Shop's win a new bathroom contest for Valentines day, so I decided to enter it. I ended up taking third place and that jump started my bathroom renovation."

-How did The Tile Shop help make this project possible?

The tile shop helped me out by giving me a very deep discount on the tile I bought for taking third place in the contest. I want to stress that the tile shop not only helped me financially with the bathroom renovation, but also with their staff's expert knowledge with design and installation. They guided me through the design including: color schemes, tile size, textures, and materials. If I had a question about the installation, I called the tile shop and any one of their staff could answer my questions.

-What was the tiling experience like?

It was tough, but extremely rewarding. To look at your bathroom and say I did all of this is a pretty amazing feeling.

-Are you and Alexa happy with the finished bathroom?

We are completely thrilled about the new bathroom. We am proud of it, we love the look of it, and we think that it couldn't have turned out better.

-What do you like most about the after bathroom?

I think my favorite part of the bathroom are the Bridgeport glass tiles along with the trim pieces we installed. They give the bathroom the color and the look we were going for. Contemporary yet vintage... Does that even make sense? Either way it looks really cool.
